Two Senators declared on Wednesday that they are leaving their old political parties to join another ahead of the 2023 general election.

Francis Ezenwa Onyewusi represents the Imo East Senatorial District, while Haliru Dauda Jika represents the Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

During a plenary on Wednesday, Senate President Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan read their notice of defection.

Senator Francis Onyewusi, a first-term senator, was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before defecting to the Labour Party (LP), whilst his Bauchi counterpart was a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) before defecting to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The senators who defected claimed injustice and inequity in their old political parties as reasons for their failure to win primary elections.
