The US government has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has turned the food into a weapon in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Putin “certainly has weaponized food,” according to UD National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby.
He did say, though, that the Biden administration is working with partner countries to break an export blockage that is producing a global food scarcity.
He told CNN, “It clearly has militarized food – Mr. Putin has weaponized food.”
“The export blockade imposed by Putin’s regime will have a worldwide impact,” he conceded.
“We’ll definitely feel some of that here as well,” he added. “That’s why we’re working so hard to figure out alternative routes to get some of that grain out.”
