Lagos-raised Afropop musician Damilola Afolabi specializes in producing a deep, danceable groove while blending elements of reggae, R&B, and rap with Fuji’s Western Nigerian atmosphere.
When he was born in 1993, he was the son of Taiwo Afolabi, a well-known lawyer, and entrepreneur, and he was expected to run one of his father’s firms. When he was 14, he and a friend went to a recording studio and were inspired by a producer’s reaction to his freestyle. After that, he formed the Flyboiz rap group at Nigerian Turkish International College and published a single with them before relocating to the United Kingdom to further his studies. In 2012, he released two solo singles as L.A.X., “Jaye” (with Ice Prince) and “Looking for Love.”
