INEC has given all presidential candidates from political parties one week to pick their running mates.
The deadline for presidential contenders to pick their running mates has been set for June 17th, 2022, by INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
“Similarly, all Presidential and Governorship candidates must be accompanied by the names of their running mates (i.e. Vice Presidential and Deputy Governorship candidates), or the nomination will be invalid,” Yakubu said in a statement.
“On/or before the deadlines, all nominations must be uploaded to the platform.” For national elections on Friday, June 17th, 2022, the site will automatically shut down at 6 p.m. (1800 p.m.) and for state elections on Friday, July 15th, 2022, at 6 p.m. (1800 p.m.).”
As of Friday, none of the presidential contenders from the major political parties have announced their running mates.
While Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is slated to nominate a running mate from the south, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is expected to name a northerner as his vice-presidential candidate.
Tinubu, on the other hand, had stated that his running mate was in his pocket.
Given that Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, hails from Nigeria’s southern region, pundits predict his running partner will hail from the country’s northern region.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party’s (NNPPRabiu ) Kwankwaso has yet to name his running mate.
The former governor of Kano State is rumored to be considering a southern Nigerian as the party’s vice-presidential candidate.
