Dave Umahi, the governor of Ebonyi State, has denied accusations that he invited residents of the state to vote exclusively for the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2023 presidential elections.
According to reports, Umahi indicated on Monday that the state will not vote for Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, since Ebonyi is for the APC.
During the swearing-in of five commissioners, the state’s head of service, HOS, at the new government house in Abakaliki, Umahi was alleged to have said this to political leaders, traditional rulers, and the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and other stakeholders in the state.
In a statement issued by Francis Nwaze, Umahi’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Umahi stated he was simply confirming his earlier vow to support APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu.
“Our attention has been attracted to insinuations in some quarters that the Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. David Umahi, FNSE, FNATE, has specifically asked Ebonyi People not to vote for a particular candidate in the 2023 Presidential election,” the statement says in part.
“What Governor Umahi did on Monday at a Stakeholders’ meeting was done in the spirit of sportsmanship to highlight his earlier pledge to support the eventual victor of the Presidential election, who turned out to be Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.”
“By all accounts, Governor Umahi’s statement simply served to underline his intention to follow through on his prior promise of support for the Party’s Standard Bearer.”
